What's normal: shedding, selvage, and color transfer

Common fabric characteristics that are expected, not defects.

Minky is a cut-pile fabric, so a few characteristics are completely normal. Knowing about them up front saves a lot of worry.

Shedding. Because the fibers are shaved to length, some loose fibers shed at first. It usually stops after 2–3 washes. Shaking the fabric out or a quick first wash before sewing helps.

Selvage edges. The first inch or so along each edge of the fabric is the selvage — it allows for handling and may look slightly different or imperfect. Plan to trim it; it's expected and accounted for in our pricing.

Roll ends. Minor flaws at the very beginning and end of a roll are normal and accounted for in wholesale pricing.

Color transfer. Washing colors with whites can cause transfer or bleeding, especially with deep shades. Wash lights and darks separately.

When it's actually a defect. If you receive fabric with a genuine flaw (a run, hole, misprint, or the wrong color/size), that's different — see "Damaged, defective, or wrong item" for how to report it with photos.

For wholesale orders specifically, note that we don't accept damage claims below 5% of the order quantity, since small selvage and roll-end variation is expected. Details are in the Wholesale section.
